How "Impossible" Air Conditioning Becomes Possible: The Miracle of Mini-Splits

“Impossible things are happening every day!”

Remember the story of Cinderella? In the 1957 Rogers and Hammerstein musical, the fairy Godmother declares that “impossible things are happening every day!” She is right – especially in the world of air conditioning. What used to be impossible, is now possible. Difficult areas to cool can now be kept comfortable, no matter their layout, their size, or their connection to other areas of a home - thanks to the miracle of mini splits!

What is a mini split?

Mini splits are ductless air conditioning. They are compact, versatile units. Instead of pushing air through elaborate (and expensive-to-install ductwork), mini split units are placed in a room and then simply connect to one outside unit with a small tube and a tiny hole in the wall.

Mini splits can be wall hung, floor-mounted, or even placed in the ceiling. Each mini split can cool what is previously considered to be an “impossible” area to control.

That free-standing workshop or garage that you can never get cool enough...

The new room addition that is NEVER the right temperature...

Your attic storage that is impossible to work in...

Whatever “impossible” situation you want to air condition, mini splits can now do it!

Advantages of mini splits

Easy to install:

Mini split systems are quick and easy to install because you don’t have to get into ceilings and alter existing ductwork. Instead, drilling one small hole is all that is required to connect the inside mini split to the outside air handler. Compare the ease of that one simple modification to traditional ducted systems, which require complex duct installation and sometimes even structural modifications.

Energy Efficiency:

Mini-splits deliver comfort at impressive efficiencies—up to 28.5 SEER for cooling and up to 18 HSPF for heating. Unlike ducted systems that lose energy through leaky ducts, mini splits directly deliver warm or cool air into the room.

Another energy advantage is that over time, ducts get dirty. Sometimes rodents nest in them. It’s common for the seams in ducts to loosen and develop leaks, releasing the cooled air into empty spaces. An Energy Star study suggests that most homes lose 20-30% of their cooling capability in ducts.

Mini splits are much more efficient. Say goodbye to wasted energy!

Long-Term Savings:

Higher efficiency means ongoing savings on your energy bills. Mini splits pay for themselves over their lifespan.

Mini splits use 60% less energy than standard home electric radiators.

Homes can save as much as 30% on their energy bills after installing mini splits. Not only are they more efficient, but you have more control over when you use them.

Personalized Comfort by Zones

Each indoor unit in a mini-split system can be independently controlled. No more battling over the thermostat! Set different temperatures for different rooms or turn off units in unoccupied spaces.  Use them only when you need them and set the temperature at whatever temperature the current occupant desires.

Mini splits excel at zoning. Keep bedrooms cozy while dialing down the living room during the day. It’s like having a tailored climate for each room. Many units even have sensors that automatically turn on when someone enters the room and then turn off when the room is unoccupied, saving energy and money!

Quiet Operation:

Does it really matter how loud your air conditioner is?

By eliminating ductwork, mini splits also eliminate a common source of noise. No more whooshing sounds or vibrating ducts disturbing your peace.  Mini splits work at between 24 dB (decibels), the sound of a whisper, and 35 dB, the sound of a quiet room.  Compare those noise levels to other types of air conditioners, such as window units, split systems, and packaged central air conditioners, which can range from 50–72 dB.

Year-Round Comfort: Heating and Cooling in One

Florida is a warm state, for sure, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need occasional heat. One of the great advantages of mini split systems is that they are not just for cooling. One compact unit heats and cools your space.

A bonus is the year-round Auto-Restart Feature. After a power outage, mini splits automatically resume their previous settings. No more fumbling with controls!

Environmental Awareness:

Consumers care about their carbon footprint. Energy-efficient HVAC systems, like mini-splits, align with environmental goals. They use electricity instead of fossil fuels, helping fight the problem of greenhouse gases that are changing our climate. Governments around the world are incentivizing greener technologies, further boosting mini-split adoption.

Mini splits are increasing in popularity

The U.S. mini-split air conditioning system market was valued at USD 1.3 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2024 to 2032.

Globally, the residential segment dominates the mini-split market, followed by the commercial segment.  Small commercial businesses and retail operations are embracing mini-split technology, too, fueling its growth.

Energy efficiency, tailored climate control, and ease of installation drive this increase in sales. As more people seek comfort without compromise, mini-splits are the answer.
