Another year has rolled around.

If it came in the haze of holiday-hangover, you might not be expecting what’s coming your way.

ServiceOne Air Conditioning and Plumbing wants to help prepare you for a great 2024. Here are 5 BIG events that you’ll want to be ready for!

ONE: Mickey and Minnie in new roles

You may not realize it, but January 1 of any year is known as Public Domain Day! At the beginning of each year, copyrights rollover. Illustrations, films, and books published in 1928, along with songs from 1923, now move into the realm of Public Domain, and anyone can use them without charge.

Here in the Orlando area where Mickey and Minnie are the prime attractions, it may be hard to envision them in new roles. But as of now, any image of Steamboat Willie Mickey and/or Minnie are yours to build upon! You can make a picture book and introduce your own characters. You can use the Steamboat Willie Mickey as a springboard for more adventures. You can make your own YouTube video in the shape of the 1928 Mickey Mouse doing X-stream sports, playing at Carnegie Hall, or causing a ruckus at school if you want.

In the world of illustrators and creators, the loss of copyright on the original Mickey and Minnie Mouse is big news. We wanted you to be prepared for any shocking new situations you might see Mickey and Minnie in!

TWO: 2024 is a Leap Year

What will you do with an extra day?

2024 is a Leap Year when a day is added to make up for the fact that our calendars are off a bit from the exact time it takes the earth to rotate the sun.

In reality, our year is divided into 365 days, but it actually takes the earth 365+1/4 days to rotate the sun. That means that every four years, we have an extra day that we add onto the shortest month.

We celebrate February 29th this year.

If you think that Leap Year comes along every four years without exception, you’d be wrong. Leap Years occur when the current year is divisible by four, but only when the CENTURY is also divisible by 400. That means that there were no Leap Years in 1700 or 1900!

THREE: Total Solar Eclipse in April

Even though Central Florida won’t be in the direct path of the eclipse, it will still be partially visible. But much of the world, particularly a swath from the southwest, over the Midwest, and exiting over the northeast will be enthralled with the total solar eclipse that will occur on April 8, 2024.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, blocking out the light of the sun. The total duration of the eclipse in 2024 will be 4 minutes and 27 seconds, a full two minutes longer than the eclipse of 2017!

No doubt about it, Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” will get more air time this year, and millions of people will view a stupendous event.

FOUR: The Summer Olympics in Paris

Paris, France will host the Summer Olympics from Friday, July 26 through Sunday, August 11, 2024.

The Summer Olympic Games feature 32 different sports including all the swimming and aquatic events, archery, basketball, golf, gymnastics, and weight-lifting, just to name a few. In addition, there will be four new sports featured: “Breaking,” or “break-dancing,” along with sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing.

And just because we want you to be prepared for cool events in the future, know that the 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, California!

FIVE: The Hottest Year EVER is projected to happen in 2024!

2023 was the hottest year on record, and major scientific and meteorological agencies throughout the world are predicting that 2024 will surpass the heat of last year!

The Paris Agreement on Climate Change was signed as a legally binding agreement by 196 countries in 2015. Recognizing that climate change was hurting our environment, it banded countries together to “limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.”

When the temperature rises more than 1.5 degrees, more risks of severe climate change occur. Droughts, heatwaves, and excessive rainfall are all more likely.

Predictions are that due to weather patterns like El Nino, and the greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere will cause our temperature this year to be between 1.46 – 1.58 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times, leading to more some devastating weather events.

But here’s the good news:
